The Getaboard Foundation was founded in 2003 to support the growing number of underprivileged and at-risk youth that have become attracted to the action sports industry and its lifestyle due to such popular events as the X-Games, the Dew Tour, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater Video Games. These adolescents want and need a pastime such as action sports to help them make it through their often-turbulent lives. The Getaboard Foundation provides free surfing, skateboarding, and art lessons for these kids to give them a positive outlet in their time of need.
Our mission at The Getaboard Foundation is to positively influence at-risk youth through action sports, the arts and education. We accomplish our mission through our various programs that reach out to under privileged and at-risk youth in the local community.
In a time short, money short, hurried life that most people experience these days, kids need an activity that they can enjoy and practice day in and day out with minimal adult supervision and can be done alone or with friends, while still keeping their attention and focus. Surfing, skateboarding, and the arts have these attributes and help at-risk youth and young people in general, build self-esteem, self-respect, and self- confidence. A positive skill, talent or passion can help these kids combat peer pressure and bad influences in one of the most critically important, yet volatile times in their lives. A child or young adult realizing they posses a positive skill or talent can use this passion to help them explore, understand and confidently express their view of the world around them to others.
