The Getaboard "Ocean Safety Environmental Awareness" (OSEA) program- provides a fun–filled lifeguard chaperoned, day at the beach, teaching Central Florida's at-risk youth about ocean safety, the environment, and how to surf. Some of these kids have lived their whole lives less than an hour from the coast, yet have never seen the ocean, spent a day at beach, or walked barefoot in the sand. The OSEA program introduces them to a whole new world of opportunities that most had never considered. Kids need a focus to help them stay out of trouble. The OSEA program provides that focus by teaching kids how to surf in a safe environment, and by showing them how much fun it is to be outdoors, in the sun, enjoying life. Surfing builds, self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance in young people. Surfing teaches kids to respect others, Mother Nature, and themselves. The OSEA program also helps teach our kids about the environment, cultural diversity and the importance of physical fitness in their everyday lives. |

The Getaboard Skate Club- Getaboard has teamed up with the Coalition for
the Homeless of Central Florida to provide free
after-school skateboarding lessons to at-risk
youth in several of Central Florida’s Homeless
Shelters.
This program provides at-risk-youth the
chance to learn the basics of skateboarding.
Beyond learning basic skateboarding
maneuvers, the children participating in this
program are given a chance to be involved in a
positive, creative, outdoor activity.
This unique opportunity is giving
children faced with extreme adversity a sense of
empowerment and self respect.
Getaboard wants to spark the fire of
curiosity in our participants so that they see
the positive potential in themselves and the
world around them and are excited to explore
these possibilities.
The Getaboard Skate Club is a mobile
skateboarding clinic which takes place at various
Homeless Shelters around the Orlando area. In 2011,
this program is estimated to change the lives of
over 500 kids throughout Central Florida by proving
them with their very first skateboarding experience.
The goal of the Getaboard Skate Club is to:
·
Introduce at-risk youth to a sport outside of
their normal environment
·
Excite kids to establish an active, healthy
lifestyle
·
Help at-risk youth build self esteem and
confidence
·
Prevent youth crime and violence by allowing
kids to discover the fun, excitement and challenge
of action sports
·
Provide positive mentors and role models to our
at-risk youth |
