The Getaboard "Ocean Safety Environmental Awareness" (OSEA) program provides a fun–filled lifeguard chaperoned, day at the beach, teaching central Florida's at-risk youth (who know how to swim) about ocean safety, the environment, and how to surf. Some of these kids have lived their whole lives less than an hour from the coast, yet have never seen the ocean, spent a day at beach, or walked barefoot in the sand. The OSEA program introduces them to a whole new world of opportunities that most had never considered. Kids need a focus to help them stay out of trouble. The OSEA program provides that focus by teaching kids how to surf in a safe environment, and by showing them how much fun it is to be outdoors, in the sun, enjoying life. Surfing builds, self-esteem, self-confidence and self-reliance in young people. Surfing teaches kids to respect others, Mother Nature, and themselves. Supporting the OSEA program will also help teaches kids about the environment, cultural diversity and the importance of physical fitness in their everyday lives. |
